Ever wonder how garage door springs are made? These powerful components play a critical role in helping your garage door lift and lower safely and smoothly — and the process to create them is both fascinating and highly technical. In this video, we take you behind the scenes into the world of garage door torsion spring manufacturing. 1. Raw Material Selection Garage door springs are typically made from high-tensile, oil-tempered steel wire. This wire is designed to handle extreme amounts of stress, bending, and twisting over thousands of cycles. Wire diameters can range from about 0.192 inches up to 0.375 inches, depending on the size and weight of the door it’s designed for. The material is chosen for its durability, fatigue resistance, and strength-to-weight ratio. 2. Wire Straightening & Feeding Once the steel wire is selected, it's uncoiled and straightened using a wire feeding machine. This step is critical for ensuring the spring coils will be uniform and consistent. The straightened wire is then fed into an automated spring coiler, which wraps the wire into tightly wound spirals around a steel mandrel. The number of coils, wire diameter, and pitch are all pre-programmed depending on the specs needed for the final spring. 3. Coiling the Spring The coiling machine precisely forms the wire into a helical spring — typically a torsion spring for overhead garage doors. These springs are carefully calibrated during this process to maintain a specific inner diameter (commonly 1.75” or 2”) and coil length. Each spring is designed to handle a specific amount of torque, depending on the weight and size of the garage door it will counterbalance. 4. Heat Treatment After coiling, the spring goes through a heat treatment process to increase its durability and fatigue resistance. This involves heating the spring to high temperatures (around 900–1000°F) and then tempering it by cooling it down at a controlled rate. This hardens the metal and allows it to store and release energy safely over many cycles without deforming or snapping. 5. Cone Installation Next, metal cones are installed on each end of the spring: The stationary cone is mounted to the center bracket of the garage door system. The winding cone allows technicians to add or remove tension during installation. These cones are either pressed or crimped onto the spring and are often color-coded (red for right-hand wind, black for left-hand wind) to indicate the direction of tensioning. Safety Reminder: Garage door springs are under extreme tension and can cause serious injury if handled incorrectly.
